News October 2016

Extensive site preparation was again done predominatly Tricky Trees, with the help of cutting a number of wilding pines this year. The appearance of the ridge for future plantings has changed remarkably.

Once again we were blessed with perfect weather for our plantings in 2016 and did not have to cancel any dates. Thank you!

On 4 June 2016  92 kauri were planted up on the Black Jack Kuaotunu, by 20 friends and family of Cliff Heraud, to mark each year of Cliff’s life. These were planted on the right hand side of the road as you head towards Otama, carrying on from the planting we did for Julie Heraud on her passing.

10 larger kauri were planted along the edge of the reserve past the Kuaotunu village and tucked into the bush adjacent to the walking track going up the hill.  It was a glorious day to plant and we finished up with a lovely soup and a Hardy’s Chardonnay at Cliff’s place.

Mercury Bay Area School came up to Myndamens Hill in rather bleak conditions but it turned out not to be so bad, they planted 412 in total over 2 days this year!

On both days of school planting the children were really enthusiastic as were the parents, it was great to have a DOC presence as well.

BNZ planters rocked up and planted 304 kauri. They relished the various nooks and crannys that there site had along with some steeper slopes. They finished off their day with a well deserved feed.
