Welcome to the latest news from Kauri 2000. This section of our
website is continually being updated so remember to check it regularly.
The Kauri 2000 newsletter is issued twice a year.
The Government released its discussion paper on the removal of land
from Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act. The Kauri 2000 Trust
views this with deep concern, particularly as the area identified
as Hauraki Hill on the map of proposed Coromandel sites is actually
Kauri Hill, where we have planted well over 3000 kauri on behalf
of you, our supporters.
For more
information on Government proposals download the pdf at www.med.govt.nz/templates/StandardSummary____42577.aspx
Please let us know your views, and better still, let the
Government know! Public submissions must be received by
5pm Tuesday 4 May.

Your subscription is vital to help fund our work, so we can ensure
that our new forest grow and thrive – thank you, it is welcomed
by all of us.
This year we
have made a slight change to our subscriptions by making one fee
of $25 for every subscription instead of separating single and family
memberships.
The cost of
our trees has also increased from $15 to $20, a necessary increase
due to rising costs, which we know will be well understood by everyone.
John Gaukrodger,
Department of Conservation, has left the Hauraki district to take
up a new position in Te Kuiti to manage the completion of the 65km
Central North Island Rail Trail. This is a wonderful challenge for
John, but we are truly sad to see him go. John has been with Kauri
2000 since it was little more than an idea. He threw his full support
behind our Trust from the beginning and identified areas of DoC
land suitable for us to plant. We are one of the few organisations,
which has a Memorandum of Agreement with DoC.

Kauri
2000 wouldn’t be here today with some 30,000 trees in
the ground if it were not for John who has been our advisor,
mentor, supporter, track builder, planter – and extremely
valued friend – for our entire journey. We know that
he will always be there to offer his thoughts and encouragement
but we will miss his presence in our Coromandel region.
Go
well John. We wish you every success and satisfaction in your
new role. You leave a great legacy of commitment to our conservation
estate for which we are all grateful. Thank you for everything
you have done for Kauri 2000 over the last 11 years. |
