Welcome to the latest news from Kauri 2000. This
section of our website is continually being updated so remember
to check it regularly. The Kauri 2000 newsletter is issued twice
a year.
Alison Henry has
stepped down as chair due to increased Community Board commitments
but remains a trustee. Long time trustee, Vivienne McLean was elected
as our new chair at the AGM.
Key to the
success of all we do is the generosity of our sponsors and “family”
of friends. Their support ensures that our work of preparing planting
sites, maintaining trees and planning for the future continues.
We are extremely fortunate to have this solid, enthusiastic support
behind us.
With thousands of Rugby World Cup followers touring New Zealand,
Kauri 2000 was concerned about the increased risk of bringing kauri
dieback disease to the Coromandel Peninsula. Tourism Holdings
Ltd included Kauri 2000 promotional bookmarks and brochures
in the customer information provided in all their vans during the
Rugby World Cup. Nick Farland – Senior Communications
Adviser for MAF provided funding for the bookmarks outlining on
one side what to do to prevent the spread of this disease and promoting
Kauri 2000 on the other.
SupplyIT Ltd. from Auckland is supporting Kauri
2000 as part of their programme of recycling computer consumables.
They are offering their customers Recycling and Replanting Programs’
to help make their offices carbon neutral. SupplyIT, in conjunction
with the Kauri 2000 Trust will plant kauri trees for companies each
year they are a customer to balance their greenhouse gas (carbon)
emissions on a annual basis. Their free toner recycling service
also prevents waste toners from ending up in landfills. Look
for the SupplyIT web site on our Sponsors and Supports page.
As many of
you are aware we have started planting again at Coromandel Town's,
Kauri Hill. The trust has planted some 4000 kauri in this area and
are committed to planting another 2000 over the next few years.
The trust decided
to dedicate last year’s planting of 600 kauri to the people
of Christchurch. A dedication ceremony was held on 22nd September
with Rev Claire Stewart giving the blessing.
A plaque with
the following was placed at the site. A commemorative certificate
and photo was sent to Mayor Bob Parker.
The
600 kauri planted on this site in the autumn of 2011
are
dedicated to the courage of the people of Christchurch
following
the earthquakes of September 2010 and 2011
and
to honour those who perished.

Cliff
Heraud was invited by the Kauri Museum at Matakohe to attend
the premier of three documentaries on the history and future
of the kauri. Commissioned by the Kauri Museum, all three
were produced and directed by documentary maker Tom Williamson.
They draw heavily on previously unseen archival footage and
stills that document the history of kauri, kauri gum and their
uses.
Cliff was interviewed in ‘Kauri – heart of the
forest, soul of the nation’ about the founding of the
Kauri 2000 Trust and the stands of kauri it has planted on
the Coromandel Peninsula since 1999. Against the historical
backdrop of the destruction of original kauri forests, the
Trust’s work in planting and caring for kauri was put
in a perspective that is not often seen.
The DVD is available through the Kauri Museum at Matakohe
or online from www.kauri-museum.com

The Trust has
had new signs placed at three of our planting sites (Matarangi Reserve,
Waikawau and Lynch Stream) explaining the work of Kauri 2000 and
significant information about the area. We thank trustee Sarah Cooper,
sign maker Sonia Frimmel (“What’s The Story”)
for creating the signs and funding from Waikato Regional Council,
Environmental Initiatives Funding – National Heritage Programme
Manager, Kevin Collins.
Tairua School continues
to expand "their" forest above Sailor's Grave where
students under the careful guidance of trustee Cherry Ladd
are gradually transforming the area into a kauri forest for
the future. The students along with Cherry erected their sign
at the Lynch Stream track on the Tairua hill.
