Joan Gaskell Drive PlantingEarliest settlers commemorated

At the beginning of October on the main road into Whitianga, Joan Gaskell Drive, five kauri saplings were planted by family members of the five earliest settlers in Mercury Bay.

Ngati Hei representatives with members of families McLeod, Creed, Simpson and Wells(and Gaskell) planted the trees to match those on the opposite side of the road.

Organised by Kauri 2000 the planting is in line with the Mercury Bay Community Board's plan to plant trees on all routes into Whitianga.
