KAURI 2000 NEWS

Welcome to the latest news from Kauri 2000. This section of our website is continually being updated so remember to check it regularly. The Kauri 2000 newsletter is issued twice a year.

Bravo 61

Members of Bravo 61 gathered at Rings Beach in March this year to unveil their memorial plaque and picnic table. The memorial is made from an old kauri slab from Whangapoua with an inset plaque of rimu inscribed “A gifted memorial from the soldiers and families of Bravo 61, 1st Battalion NZ Regiment Malaya 1961 – 63. To Kauri 2000, to the residents of, and visitors to, Kuaotunu and Rings Beach. Created from an inspirational desire by Major W.G. Pike M.L.D. Officer Commanding of Bravo 61 in Malaya and generously encouraged and supported by Kauri 2000 founder Cliff Heraud. Please feel welcome to use, enjoy and respect these facilities, they are here for the use of all.”
In July the members of Bravo 61 came back and planted another 150 kauri seedling.

Kauri in the bag!

Maurice Te Brake, manager of our local New World supermarket, recently provided a number of 'Pams' long-life shopping bags to ease the task of carrying seedlings and equipment to the planting areas.

Thank you Maurice, we will make good use of them for many years to come.

'Our' trees are having babies!!

Trustee and professional forest ranger Max Johnston and trustee Cliff Heraud visited Kauri 2000's inaugural planting site in the Kauearanga Valley in August for a routine check and discovered three of those first trees have just formed several cones on each of them.

The cones are about the size of walnuts, but on trees 9 years old this is exceptional. “The second generation is not far away!” said a delighted Max.

BNZ "BIG" Cheque

In July the Bank of New Zealand had their first planting day with Kauri 2000.  They are commemorating every Kauri Bond issue they arrange by planting 100 kauri seedlings.

Pictured, surrounded by kauri seedlings, are Patrick Mullins head of Capital Markets Origination at the Bank of New Zealand giving, and Alison Henry chair of Kauri 2000, receiving the cheque.  That's a BIG CHEQUE!
