KAURI 2000 NEWS

Welcome to the latest news from Kauri 2000. This section of our website is continually being updated so remember to check it regularly. The Kauri 2000 newsletter is issued twice a year.

ANOTHER PLANTING SEASON IS UPON US

As we head into autumn Kauri 2000’s planting season is just around the corner. There is a lot to do to get ready.

This season we will be planting at two major sites – Matarangi Reserve and Kauri Hill, Coromandel. The Tairua School students will be planting again at Sailors Grave.

Site preparation work has started with our contractors cutting lines and clearing regrowth to get ready for the trees.

We are quite excited about the Kauri Hill site as we have not planted there for a few years. Our forest advisor, Max Johnston, Trustee Mark Mentzer, Keith Stephenson and Contractor, Glen Lees met at Kauri Hill along with DoC representatives to make planting plans for this year. The site has the potential for several thousand kauri. Our plan is to plant 600 each year. Keith Stephenson is our new ‘man on the ground’ at Coromandel and will organise the site preparation and volunteers to plant. A big ‘Thank You’ to the Waikato Community Conservation Fund for funding the site preparation.

But before all this starts, we need to source our kauri. In February each year seed collection takes place. We use only Coromandel eco sourced seed.

Andy Harrison has been collecting seed for Kauri 2000 for many years. The seed is then sent to Taupo Native Plant Nursery who grow much of our stock.

We have worked with their Operations Manager, Dave Dalton for many years to get the stock ‘just right’

It takes up to 3 years to grow a kauri from seed to a plantable size, 600mm.

They have been doing this for 12 years and their trees grow in a beautiful native bush setting with loving nurture.

Recently Mark made the trip up to the South Auckland branch of Taupo Native Plant Nursery to inspect this year’s stock.

He met with the local Manager, Michael Watts who is well versed in tree knowledge.

The growing site is in an old orchard, which is well suited for growing kauri. We are expecting about 1200 young kauri from them this year.

VOLUNTEER PLANTERS NEEDED!

Our first planting date is Satruday 11 June 2011 at the Matarangi Reserve. If you think you might like to come out and join us send us an e-mail with your details info@kauri2000.co.nz

It is a wonderful day out in the bush doing something good for the future.

SURVEY OF PERFORMANCE OF KAURI 2000 PLANTINGS IS UNDERWAY

Kauri 2000 monitors and maintains all of our trees for at least five years until the trees are established.

Currently a survey of performance is being done on our planting sites by Scion Research scientist Dr. David Bergin. It is part of a national survey of indigenous plantation by Tane’s Tree Trust in collaboration with the Crown Research Institute Scion. We will advise you of the outcome.
